James Callahan's Military Records

When the United States declared war on Spain in 1898, men from across the western mining states answered the call. Among them was James A. Callahan, who enlisted with the 1st Montana Volunteer Infantry and reported for training at Helena, Montana. By the time their preparation was complete, however, the war with Spain had largely run its course. Instead, the regiment was sent across the Pacific to the Philippine Islands, where American forces soon became embroiled in a new and more complicated conflict—the Philippine–American War.

The records that follow—muster rolls, enlistment papers, and official military documents—preserve the outline of Callahan’s service and trace the path that carried a miner from the Rocky Mountain West into America’s first overseas war.
